Our Story

Overcomers Youth Mentoring was founded out of a simple but urgent need: too many young people are navigating life without consistent guidance, support, or someone in their corner.

Originally established as a mentoring program by Ron Fredrick, Overcomers was later restructured by Chip and LaVaughn Hull into a nonprofit organization focused on helping youth find stability, purpose, and personal growth. Through years of firsthand experience, they saw how one consistent, caring presence can change the direction of a young person’s life—and committed themselves to making that kind of support more accessible.

Chip spent over 13 years working as a correctional officer in a county jail, where he saw a repeating pattern—many young people lacked positive role models and guidance at critical points in their lives. He later served more than 15 years in ministry as a pastor and youth pastor, where he walked closely with youth and witnessed the lasting impact of mentorship, encouragement, and faith-centered relationships.

LaVaughn’s heart for youth is deeply personal. Growing up in a broken home and experiencing homelessness as a child, she understands firsthand the challenges many young people face. Those experiences shaped her compassion and her commitment to reaching youth who are often overlooked. She later served alongside Chip in ministry, worked with teens in public school systems, and supported youth in a girls transitional home—continuing to build meaningful, trust-based relationships.

Together, their experiences revealed a clear and consistent need: many youth are missing stable, positive influences during some of the most important seasons of their lives.

Overcomers exists to meet that need—by connecting at-risk and justice-involved youth with mentors who provide consistent support, encouragement, and direction. As a faith-based nonprofit, our approach is rooted in compassion, relationship, and the belief that every young person has value, purpose, and the ability to overcome.
